Having read this right on the heels of Ilium, Olympos takes all of the worst parts of. Ilium is Dan Simmons first full-length science fiction novel since The Rise of Endymion in 1997. The title was originally used for the collection of the first pair of books in the series, Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, and later came to refer to the overall story line, including Endymion, The Rise of Endymion, and a number of short stories. Set in the far future, and focusing more on plot and story development than technical detail, it falls into the soft science fiction category, and could be described as space opera. Visual effects facility Digital Domain and Barnet Bain Films ('What Dreams May Come') have optioned author Dan Simmons' sci-fi novel 'Ilium' and its sequel, 'Olympos,' to adapt into a feature film. Though it touches on many topics, the story is perhaps best described as a high-tech reenactment of The Trojan War. (Admittedly, I gave five stars to Dan Simmons’ other epic work, Hyperion, despite the fact that it doesn’t stand on its own. Ilium, and its sequel Olympos, are a pair of Speculative Fiction novels by writer Dan Simmons, telling a sprawling epic story that is conveyed through three seemingly disconnected but intertwining narratives.

Olympos gets three stars because it also doesn’t stand on its own and because it’s just not as good as Ilium, which seems to be the near-universal consensus if GR reviews are to be trusted. The Trojan War rages at the foot of Olympos Mons on Mars - observed and influenced from on high by Zeus and his immortal family - and twenty-first-century.
